Hello lovely LDV readers! Nancy of Marcus Design here and I am thrilled to be back, helping to kick off fall with the return of the Dissecting the Details series here on Paloma’s blog. With September comes longer evenings spent indoors, perhaps cozy-ing up with a new read. And as we all know, so many wonderful new book releases in the fall make it easy for us to expand our personal collections! So today I am focusing in on the home library; and whether large or small, it’s a place that exudes comfort. Texas-based interior designer, and founder of James Showroom, Meredith Ellis expertly includes this feature in many of her projects. Let’s look at 4 key elements she utilizes to create these stunning spaces.
I love all of the millwork that Meredith includes in her projects, and everything painted out one hue creates the perfect backdrop for all the other elements of a home library. In some cases you’ll notice even the ceiling is painted out to create one seamless canvas. Whether lacquered or matte, the finished space envelopes you in such an inviting way; I would never want to leave!
As much as I believe it’s important to layer in collected objects and art for interest, I still believe a library is just that – a library. A place to store a true collection of books; and I think this lends to an authentic feel for any bookshelf. Too many objects can look staged, forced, or like you just went out on an accessories shopping spree at your local big-box store. If your own book collection is limited, start collecting now! And try searching Craigslist or local antique shops for used sets of encyclopedias and other books with handsome spines. You will be amazed the amount of soul that actual books will bring to the space.
Last but definitely not least, I love that Meredith places bookshelves in the dining room in several of her projects. I think it’s something on my dream-home list – imagine a dinner party by candlelight while surrounded by books! Such an appealing backdrop.
There you have it, 4 lovely details that Meredith Ellis includes in here library spaces! I would love to use each of these ideas in my own home. To see more from Meredith’s stunning portfolio visit her website here, instagram here, and the James Showroom instagram here. Until next time!
