Hello, LDV readers! This is Karima from A Note on Style. I love September. It’s arrival stirs a sense of something new on the horizon. Technically, it’s still summer, but something about turning the calendar page to September means fall. And, with that is the urge to review upcoming travel, projects around the home and refresh my wardrobe. Once the traditional school calendar kicks in, which is forever ingrained in my rhythm, I’m motivated to get back to a schedule.

I’m always ready for the shift, particularly with what to wear, but the weather doesn’t usually cooperate. So, I’ll hold off on cozy sweaters and an autumn palette until next month. For now, I’ll be a bit more resourceful in my closet and select things that offer more coverage, but still light in weight. I’ll pay attention to the new silhouettes of the season, but be mindful of their wearability while it’s still warm.

Emmanuelle Alt is on my September mood board sporting a black and white look that sums up what I mean. Wearing an updated high-waist, belted trouser with a tapered leg is spot on going forward. It’s a silhouette that looks modern. I’d pair the trouser with a polished sandal now and switch to a boot and oversized chunky knit later. I’d also love to see it dressed up with a silk blouse, slim jacket and a heel for evening. I’m fully embracing this retro-80s silhouette in both trousers and jeans.

By the way, wouldn’t it look beautiful with Hayward’s black floral bag? I love the little pops of color and the workmanship of the sweet embroidery. Aside from being a stunning bag, it’ll stand out amongst the seas of ordinary black bags. I’m also fond of other options from Hayward in a chic leopard print or classic camel.

Gold is looking better than ever right now as a home accent and to wear. I’m reaching for jewelry pieces in gold more often than silver lately. The transition to fall calls for items with a bit more heft, weight and substance. A bold necklace of simple oversized links or shells is the hero piece right now, followed by hoop earrings in all shapes and sizes. I saw the Sophie Bille Brahe x Georg Jensen Halo collaboration in Copenhagen this summer and am obsessed with her designs.

I gained a renewed appreciation for Scandinavian design on all fronts, not just fashion, while traveling as well. I spent hours in Ilums Bolighus, Svenskt Tenn and Malmstenbutiken, three home design shops I highly recommend. Many of the European designers stocked in these shops have a knack for reinventing interior everyday objects through minimal lines and modern shapes. British designer Ilse Crawford’s candle holder for Georg Jensen is a perfect example. I think its pared back design would appear timeless and classic in any living space.

I want to end with a beauty note for the month. I make an effort to maintain a healthy looking glow year round. That doesn’t necessarily mean a bronzer though. I’ve found Jillian Dempsey’s cheek and lid tint are all I need. They’re sheer, layer well and impart just enough color for a natural look, which is what I’m usually after. I have several of them, including the lilac lid tint which is surprisingly flattering. They complement rather than camouflage, letting skin look like skin, which to me equates to real beauty.
