Hello LDV readers, it’s Nancy of Marcus Design blog visiting for my Dissecting the Details series. I’m excited to share the work of one of my favorite designers with all of you today, Kevin Isbell.  His firm, Kevin Isbell Interiors, is based in both New York and Los Angeles. What draws me to his work is the compelling combination of old world, culturally distinct, yet fresh and inviting design. Let’s dissect 4 key elements that Kevin utilizes in creating comfortable, timeless, and beautiful living rooms:
ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS

Whether it’s traditional paneling, detailed ceiling beams, or arched windows, Kevin always sets the stage with the bones of the spaces he creates. This foundational element elevates the entire room and is essential to his work. What if the room doesn’t contain many structural elements to work with? Kevin makes it look easy by creating them with details such as a trim of tortoise shell bamboo and a painted ceiling as seen directly above.

ART IN MANY FORMS

Don’t think of just the traditional paintings framed and hung on the wall; Kevin’s spaces expertly include sculptural pieces that stand out, or even hand painted murals splashed across the room for maximum impact. The shapes and silhouettes of the furnishings he selects complement the art in the space.

RICH JEWEL TONES

I am very much drawn to the deep saturated hues that Kevin utilizes in these living rooms. The layering and combination of the various jewel tones adds so much flavor and character. Even if the walls are white, the room does not read as white because of the addition of these fabrics, artwork, and lighting.

MULTI-PURPOSE SEATING ARRANGEMENTS

This last element may be my favorite of the four. Having a living space that can serve multiple functions is not only practical but rather beautiful and glamorous. There may be a piano and central round table perfectly conducive to entertaining, or a desk and chair tucked in a corner ready for an impromptu work session, or many separate conversation areas perfect for a busy home. It’s so richly layered and livable.

These four features that Kevin consistently applies create living room designs that are stunningly classic.
