Art is so incredibly personal that I find it to be one of the most challenging design elements to source, but also one of the most rewarding and important to the overall success of a room. Art should either work seamlessly with the space it is in, or conversely, it can serve as a striking counterpoint that shakes things up, such as placing a modern abstract painting in an otherwise traditional room– one of my favorite techniques. Great art does not have to be cost prohibitive so long as you are creative and resourceful. Many up-and-coming artists sell directly to their followers online while thrift shops, antiques stores, and antiques shows such as Round Top and Brimfield are also wonderful sources for procuring affordable, original art. However, if you are so inclined, it is totally fine to have a mix of original and reproduction pieces in your house. I promise not to tell! In the end, what really matters is that the art you have, whether original or reproduction, makes you feel good or strikes a chord in you– possibly because it is a favorite artist or because it evokes a special memory.
A great resource for chic reproduction art is Artfully Walls. Artfully Walls offers limited edition prints by a slew of established and emerging artists in a variety of genres. They do a really great job of curating their selection which they will also frame for you making this fantastic resource a one-stop-shop! If culling together a collection of art is not your forte, you’ll be happy to find that they have fully curated gallery walls that are ready to go– simply add to cart!
While a single large statement piece can anchor a room or vignette, a grouping of art can do that as well as serve to frame or disguise a feature you may not be crazy about. For instance, in my living room, I hung quite a few beautiful pieces or art in a mix of frames around my television so that the focal point of the wall wasn’t solely a big, black rectangle.
While the term “gallery wall” may now be as common as “shiplap”, I still think salon walls (a much more elegant way of describing this application!) work when used in the right setting, such as the large walls shown throughout this post. The key to success is to have a solid plan in place before you start swinging a hammer. If you’re thinking about curating and hanging a salon wall in your home, go for it and be sure to check out Artfully Walls.
