Happy Friday! This past month has been a whirlwind, so it’s been a little while since I have been able to get one of these Friday Favorites posts together. It’s been so nice being back home this week and working on some new projects.
Style: As you know, the Met Gala was on Monday and it seems many people, including those in attendance were confused about the meaning of “camp”, this year’s theme. Here’s a hint. It has NOTHING to do with camping. Tory Burch breaks down a brief history of camp in this fun article.
Design: If you happen to be in New York, be sure to visit the Kips Bay Show House. It is a fabulous event for a worthy cause and of course, I’d love for you to see the room I designed in person. If you won’t be able to make it to New York before it closes on May 30th, you can take a tour of my space in this fun video I filmed with House Tipster.
Watch: With one of the most watched TED Talks ever, Brene Brown is a best-selling author and researcher at the University of Houston (Go Coogs!) and has really struck a chord within the cultural zeitgeist lately. Brown focuses on vulnerability and perfectionism and how these two traits can basically affect the outcome of anything and everything in our lives. Before leaving for New York a few weeks ago, I had the chance to watch her new Netflix special, The Call to Courage and it resonated very deeply with me. Brown’s outlook stems from a quote by Theodore Roosevelt which states “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.” I can honestly say that I frequently feel insecure or vulnerable and this really struck a chord, especially in the age of anonymous internet commenters who feel like they can say whatever is on their mind without a shred of civility, kindness, or just common courtesy. On the outside, you may see someone who has had some wonderful things come to fruition, but on the inside I can’t help but worry about falling flat on my face. If you have an hour this week, Brown’s Netflix special is definitely worth watching.
Read: Alexandra and Michael Misczynski are an incredibly talented husband and wife design duo. Their style is supremely chic and refined. Their first book, Interiors has become a favorite of every stylish person I know, so their latest book, Houses, which will be released on May 21st is sure to be a hit as well. I recently received an advance copy and every page is filled with beautiful inspiration.
Shop: I love accessories with interesting texture and there is no better time for raffia and wicker pieces than in the spring and summer. I just ordered this chic pair of raffia mules by Le Monde Beryl. I have a leopard pair and green velvet pair that I wear all the time. They are so versatile and go with everything, but the best part is that they are comfortable the instant you put them on (go up half a size because they run small).
