This week, my Paloma & Co partner, Devon and I are heading to San Miguel de Allende to visit a few artisans and pick up some new wares for our shop.  San Miguel is a jewel of a colonial town in central Mexico. For decades, it has attracted expats, artists, and the bohemian set, among them jet setters like Bianca Jagger and decorating doyennes including Michelle Nussbaumer and Rela Gleason, whose San Miguel house is featured in an issue of ELLE DECOR last year.

You may remember Rela as the owner of this beautiful house in Calistoga, California in my beloved Napa Valley. How wonderful it must be to have homes in such dream-worthy places! Rela and her husband, Don decided to build a home in Mexico as they knew they wanted to spend half the year living outside of the U.S., but didn’t want to venture too far from their children and grandchildren. For the San Miguel house, Casa Lala, Rela eschewed the typical hallmarks of colonial architecture and instead opted to highlight Mexican craftsmanship in a more modern way. The house with its plaster walls, steel windows, and doors, and stone floors feels very much at home in the landscape, yet the house feels completely like Rela. The result is incredibly chic and embodies modern Mexico. Maybe this will be the year I make it back to San Miguel!
