Hello lovely LDV readers, it’s Nancy of Marcus Design here, happy to be back with another Dissecting the Details installment. With the holiday season upon us, a significant amount of our time will be spent in the kitchen. Whether baking cookies to give out to friends, or hosting dinners for loved ones, there’s no other season we spend more time in the kitchen than now! I’ve long been a fan of Calgary-based designer Nam Dang Mitchell, and it just so happens she has the perfect recipe for a stunning kitchen space. In fact, one of her kitchens is the current cover of Style at Home magazine, and Nam has recently been named House & Home’s Designer of the Year. Let’s dissect 4 key elements that make her designs work so well:

NATURAL MATERIALS

Nam expertly combines wood, stone, concrete, marble and metals in order to create a feast for the eyes. The result is an interesting and luxe space, no boring materials to be found! Mixing textures and visual contrast of light and dark are a key to making this work so well. You can see even the glass panel cabinet is reeded in the image of Nam’s own kitchen (directly above), showing that even the glass surfaces are a chance to add visual interest!

LIGHT WOOD TONES

I absolutely love this look, it’s fresh and the light wood tones are a perfect backdrop to play up the drama of all of that gorgeous marble veining & tile work. The light wood cabinetry looks so smart combined with the light flooring as well. You can even take it to the ceiling beams!

MIXED METALS

Brass, copper, polished nickel and stainless steel … if you take a close look at each of this images at least a few of these options are being used together. Some might shy away from doing this, but if you’re brave in design it pays off! The finished space looks beyond polished and much more sophisticated than it would with only one type of metal across the room.

DARK CABINETRY

For years now Nam has paved the way in showing us how to do a perfect non-white kitchen. And aren’t they all so bright regardless of the dark cabinetry? It’s a chic and rich look that I think designers are only now catching up with.

Stunning work, isn’t it? To see more from Nam’s extensive portfolio hop here, and see a round up of her work on House & Home’s website here.
