Hello LDV readers! This is Karima from A Note on Style sharing the looks and pieces that are shaping my mood for the month of November. Knowing the hectic pace of the holidays is around the corner, I view this time as the calm before the storm. It’s an opportunity to get organized for what’s ahead and that includes assuring my closet has key pieces that’ll make getting dressed a breeze. Holiday events, both casual and dressy, require versatile items that are interchangeable and comfortable, with guaranteed usage far beyond the new year. Essentially, they’re updated staples I’ll be glad to have on hand, alleviating the stress of what to wear.

Investing in classics that go the distance is always a good idea and with sales looming, now is the time to pick up favorites. A camel coat is one to consider. Undoubtedly a forever piece that elevates numerous looks. Layered over everything from jeans to a dress, it always makes an elegant statement.

Another classic is a beautiful loafer that defies the season or trends. The right pair is a timeless addition to a well-rounded closet. With a bit of polish, I like loafers with skirts and dresses as much as with trousers or denim. This pair by Tod’s is perfect.

Everyone should have a hero black pant. One that travels well and pairs with just about every shoe style imaginable. A slim, straight, no-fuss silhouette works wonders. When searching for the right pair, imagine them with heels and a blouse or velvet blazer for evening, or with a slouchy sweater and boots for day.

I love a beautiful slip dress, but they can be a bit tricky. The weight of the fabric must be substantial or the dress looks too much like lingerie. It’s also not a forgiving fabric in any way, so a pattern is another element to consider. Toss on a blazer to introduce structure or layer with an oversized sweater for a more relaxed look. Adding a slim turtleneck and leggings are good options to transition the dress for colder weather.

A traditional fall color palette is warm and beautiful but occasionally benefits from a pop of white. An ivory cable knit sweater is one of my go-to options. It’s practically a year round piece looking equally chic with boots and a coat in the chilly winter as it does on cool summer nights with faded denim.

I look at accessories as the opportunity to add a little flair. When I want something just a nudge beyond classic, I’ll search for a familiar silhouette with an updated element. A ring handle, structured bag in shearling for example, would do the trick, again going day-to-night. Additionally, a single statement piece of jewelry presents a good balance to the heftier weight of fall clothing. I have my eye on this pretty link bracelet with an oversized coin charm. As opposed to the stacks of bracelets I wear throughout summer, I think this piece looks elegant on its own.

Beyond fashion, I naturally look ahead and consider the seasonal decor I’d like to use around the house and for the Thanksgiving table. I usually keep this fairly simple since it’s enjoyed for such a short period. In the theme of low stress, I’m repeating the leather tied napkins I created last year for my table. The rustic element makes for an interesting contrast with linen napkins and china. Plus, they was incredibly easy to create. I have spools of leather on hand and also use it in place of ribbon for gift wrapping.

Over the weekend, I was in a nesting mood and curled up with A Place to Call Home by architect Gil Schafer III. The cover struck me as the perfect palette for November. The book is a reminder of how much I appreciate thoughtful, personal style around the home. The arrangement of fall foliage on the cover photo is a testament to the beauty of simple, low-key style that doesn’t require overthinking. I plan on replicating that look around the house for the remainder of the month. If you haven’t read Schafer’s book, it’s a must.
