If you follow me on Instagram, then you’ve probably noticed that I frequently use the hashtag #modernmeetstraditional. The intersection of these seemingly different points of view is not only a hallmark of my own design aesthetic, but what I find too be most interesting and inspiring. While I love and appreciate spaces that are purely traditional or contemporary, it’s the mixing of periods and styles that feels the most layered and interesting and truly proves to be the most enduring. Such an approach has been called “transitional” in the popular vernacular in the past several years, but I must admit, I am not a fan of the buzz word! But I digress– take this stylish home in Brookline, Massachusetts designed by Nina Farmer of Boston for instance. The home itself was built in 1911. The homeowners sought to make their period home feel “fresh and crisp” as opposed to making an old home look brand new. A wise move, in my opinion. Farmer’s approach, with a mix of rich, layered colors, use of classic furniture silhouettes updated with interesting details, and mix of interesting patterns provides exactly what the homeowners hoped for. The handsome interiors feel classic, yet current and the aesthetic hits a perfect note between masculine and feminine.
