We recently started working on a new project for a longtime client who is building a new house. The house will be located in a beautiful setting with a meadow and a ravine and as such, rather than taking a more modern approach as we did in their former home, we are going in a slightly more casual, but no less chic direction this time around. My client, who is very well versed in design and has excellent taste wants a modern farmhouse, but hesitates to use that terminology too freely as it typically brings to mind the notion of the type of farmhouse designed by America’s HGTV Sweethearts who shall remain nameless. We are thinking more “Napa Valley modern” rather than shiplap and barn doors. In culling inspiration for this project, I came across this stunning modern farmhouse in Palo Alto, California designed by the talented sister duo behind M. Elle Design. The materials, architectural details, and airiness of the space give it a relaxed farmhouse vibe without sacrificing an ounce of sophistication. When executed this way, the idea of a modern farmhouse feels much less like a trend and much more like a timeless motif.
