Happy Friday! I have been at home, sick with bronchitis for the past three days. It has been a really long time since I have felt this terrible. It really takes a lot to keep me out of the office, but I know that staying home to rest and to avoid getting my team sick is the right choice, as much as it pains me! As such, I’ve really been trying to give my body the rest that it needs, but in between keeping up with emails, I have been spending more time on Pinterest and Instagram than usual, culling inspiration for a few new projects. During this process, I kept coming across interior designer and cookbook author, Athena Calderone’s chic Brooklyn kitchen.
The kitchen features a chic and timeless, yet simultaneously au courrant mix of materials including sumptuous slabs of Paonazzo Calcatta marble, dark cabinetry in Farrow & Ball Railings, aged brass hardware and plumbing fixtures, a plaster vent hood, airy steel windows and beautiful blond oak floors. According to Calderone, the L-shape of the space in the Greek Revival Brooklyn townhouse initially presented a challenge, but she chose to embrace it by bringing in bifold steel doors to make the space a true indoor/outdoor entertaining area. Calderone made the choice not to have upper cabinets, instead, opting for a single 20 foot long shelf where she could set her iPhone while filming cooking segments for her popular @eyeswoon Instagram account. You’ll notice the shelf is also peppered with chic accents like an antique mirror, framed art, and a small lamp. She also made the choice not to hang pendant lighting over her island to allow the vertical space to have massive bundles of fresh-cut branches instead. The result is not only beautiful, but it is perfectly layered and punctuated with personality.
