Hello lovely LDV readers! It’s Nancy of Marcus Design here and excited to be concluding 2018’s Dissecting the Details series with a fantastic design duo, M + M Interior Design. I’ve fallen in love with the polished, traditional, and sophisticated the work of Leslie Martin and Kim Meardon, the Chicago-based sisters behind this design firm. And with 9 children between the two of them, they truly know how to create stylish and functional kids spaces! Let’s dissect 4 key elements that make these stunning children’s rooms really sing (photography by Heather Talbert).
Gorgeous mixes of fabrics, colorful paint or wallpaper patterns, and heirloom quality bedding are a major foundation for these spaces. I love the mix of textures that are added with elements like grasscloth wallcoverings, quilts, and other fabric details like tape trim. As they say, the details ARE the design!
We all know that design mustn’t only be pretty, functionality is just as important as style. This doesn’t only apply to adult spaces, but to children’s rooms as well. A hard-working desk, and perhaps a reading chair, window seat, or art table, can all enhance the experience and creativity of the wee one’s who dwell here.
This element may very well be my favorite; I love how Leslie and Kim add little special touches like a ballerina bar in front of a mirror, or a monogram here and there (even in the bathroom tile work!). I can only imagine how personal and fun this would be in the eyes of a child.
Such an inspiring design detail! Whether it’s side by side beds or a full set of 4 bunks, the more the merrier in these rooms. If space is limited, or if the kids simply want to be ready for impromptu sleepovers, this layout works wonders and is incredibly stylish as well. How lovely!
