Happy Friday! Well, does it feel particularly happy to anyone? The bright spot for me today is that it is my dog Tate’s eleventh birthday! If you have read LDV for a while now then you know that Tate is like our child and means the world to us. We have had some significant health scares with him over the years, so we are incredibly grateful that our sweet boy is healthy, happy, and as spunky as ever at age eleven. If you’re like me, you’ve spent the last few days adjusting to what has become the new normal for so many of us– working from home and self-isolation. I have had many ups and downs over the past week. I worry about so many things that are entirely out of my hands. I fear the unknown– and at this point, so much is unknown. It feels as if time is moving at a snail’s pace. It is as if everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop with bated breath. Like many of you, I am afraid of what the future holds and what the economic impact will mean for my businesses, Paloma Contreras Design and Paloma & Co which I have worked tirelessly to build over the past decade.

The stillness I have been forced to face this week has taught me that I am not in control of everything. What a realization for a textbook Type A like me! I must be still and surrender. I must look for the silver lining; the lesson to be learned. At this point, I am grateful for the fact that the current state of affairs has brought us closer in some way. Everyone seems to agree that we are in this together. I have been reaching out to friends and family; hearing from people I don’t speak with often enough; tapping into my creativity. I’ve blogged nearly everyday this week which hasn’t happened in ages! I am craving connection and conversation in a major way. I have been toying with starting a podcast for a while and this might just be the push I needed to do it. Would you listen? For now, you’ll find the things that are inspiring me, that I am looking forward to, and that are providing me with an escape at this unsettling time below. I hope this helps you pass the time. How are you feeling in the face of such uncertainty?

ONE: It seems everyone is having to pivot and how to help their business or industry survive in the midst of this crisis, including the movie studios. Since people can’t go out to the movie theaters, several of the studios are moving their new films to On-Demand format. I have been wanting to see Emma since it came out a couple of weeks ago and as of today, I can watch it in the comfort of my own home. I am so excited to see this beloved tale along with the beautiful interiors and costumes this weekend!

TWO: If you’re wondering how to get some creative and satisfying meals out of your pantry and freezer staples while we are staying in for a while, look no further than experts Ina Garten and Giada de Laurentiis who are sharing some delicious, pantry-focused  recipes on their respective websites that will give you a lot of mileage out of the staples you’re likely to have on hand!

THREE: In light of the current state of affairs, our store, Paloma & Co is currently open by appointment only, online, and via FaceTime. We still have a dedicated, but socially-distanced team hard at work ensuring that shipments placed online still go out in a timely manner. The economic impact of Covid-19 is unsettling, so please, as the owner of two small businesses, I implore you to support the independently owned businesses you love in whatever way you can– write a positive review or testimonial for a service provider, buy a gift card to use at a restaurant at a later date, and shop with stores like ours whose mission is to add a bit of beauty and joy to your life. We don’t frequently run a lot of promotions, but in light of what is happening, we are offering different sales and incentives for our customers. We firmly believe in the power art can have on a person and in a space, so we are offering 15% off our entire assortment of art today through Sunday using code ART15.

FOUR: One of the biggest adjustments our current reality has had on me is the fact that I have cancelled all of my travel for the foreseeable future. It is absolutely unheard of for me to not have at least a few trips scheduled at any given time. I’ve recently cancelled multiple trips to New York, Chicago, and Paris. My beloved Paris. We were supposed to go for Fabian’s 40th birthday at the beginning of May and Devon and I should be there now, sourcing new finds for Paloma & Co. Paris has survived so many things and my hope is that all of the small business owners I have come to call friends will still be there, thriving, when I am able to go back. Until then, I’ll travel through books and magazines. One of my favorite Parisian designers and architects is Joseph Dirand. He is incredibly talented and has designed several of my favorite restaurants including Loulou, Monsieur Bleu, and Girafe. His stunning home is currently featured in Architectural Digest. Enjoy every sumptuous detail!

FIVE: My mission during this uncertain time is to look for the silver lining each day. One of those little silver linings is that time has slowed down and has allowed me more time to read and enjoy the design books I passionately collect. The latest addition to my bookshelves is the stylish Athena Calderone’s Live Beautiful which is a follow-up to her super successful first book, Cook Beautiful. In Live Beautiful, Calderone features the homes of a hip cross-section of designers and tastemakers. The airy interiors are a welcome respite at the moment and the interviews are refreshingly honest. For now, you can revisit her ultra-chic kitchen in this post.
