Hello LDV readers. It’s Karima from A Note on Style sharing with you my spin on updating a few classics including one of summer’s easiest looks. The term “updated classics” gets thrown around quite a bit and can mean a lot of different things, so I’ll explain the reasoning behind my selection. Many of the pieces I’m highlighting have a special twist to the tried and true, while others have stood the test of time and are making a comeback (hello, brown furniture). Let’s start there.

It’s been years since brown wood furniture has been in favor. Just take a quick glimpse around Instagram and design periodicals and you’ll notice how few rooms are featured with traditional dark wood furnishings. But as all things change, the pendulum is swinging back. Where before brown wood looked dated, it now adds character and a sense of timelessness. It also speaks volumes on the art of putting together a collected home which in itself feels timely with sustainability as a growing core platform. It also feels a bit more grown up. In today’s design narrative, styling a room with a few dark vintage pieces sprinkled about looks absolutely fresh. Need further inspiration? One of my go-to summer outfits is a shirtdress, flat sandals, a pair of chic sunglasses and a beautiful tote. It’s an all-time classic look that’s easy to visualize. But, add personality by choosing pieces that are unique with an interesting element yet still read as timeless. The result is more modern and far less predictable.
For starters, search for a dress that’s familiar in silhouette but perhaps unusual in color. Go against your intuition to pair with traditional summer pale-hued accessories and add rich-toned dark leather pieces in black and brown. Believe me, the mismatched pairing is beyond chic.
These strappy, flat Dior sandals are so on point with everything this season, they’re hard to pass up. Polished yet street friendly, I can imagine them with a long black simple dress for a casual evening out or with drapey full pants and a tee-shirt. The Dior may not be readily available, so if you’re shopping for something similar, focus on styles that speak more refined sophisticate than bohemian casual.
As far as the ultimate summer tote, texture is where it’s at. This year it’s all about Bottega Veneta’s maxi weave which takes the house’s iconic intrecciato and blows it up. The result is a chic statement piece you’ll have forever. You can never go wrong with anything in BV’s range of brown leathers, and this deep rosewood hue is no exception. Can’t you picture how beautiful it will be carried in the fall with gray and camel?
I’d further accessorize with a handful of pieces that quietly introduce a note of surprise. There’s nothing about this outfit that says look at me, the beauty is in the subtle details. Try bypassing black or tortoise frames and wear sunglasses in a new hue. The pale Bolsha Barton Pereira frame is a beautiful style and a refreshing contrast to the dark leather accessories.
Balance the weight of an outfit with a jewelry piece that’s simple and bold. Find a unique necklace from an under the radar designer and wear it with everything. It will become your personal signature piece. I like to source these types of things when traveling or from a well-curated boutique, such as ARIS in Laguna Beach. I’ve got my eye on a number of pieces currently at the store from Maria Beaylieu and Syna.
Even though my phone is the first place I look for the time, I still find a beautiful watch incredibly chic. A leather strapped tank will never go out of style. If I were to invest in one now, I’d gravitate towards either a vintage piece or one that’s not on everyone’s radar. The Jaeger-LeCoultre “reverso” – first developed in the 30s – is a timeless piece made even more stunning in rose gold with brown alligator.
A silk scarf adds a touch of vintage glamour to any look. Burberry’s new TB monogram – a graphic homage to founder Thomas Burberry – is a new favorite print. Tie one on to a bag or around your neck to instantly elevate an outfit. Available in several colorways, the print also looks incredibly fresh casually wrapped around a ponytail or as a chic chignon scrunchie.
