While we hope you’ve spent your time at home this year dressing casually and going for long walks in interior designer Sheila Bridges’ snappy Converse x UNION Chuck Taylor All Stars sneakers, done up in her signature Harlem Toile De Jouy fabric, the time has come to spiff up a bit more again. Just this week high heels have been spotted again at New York City’s now abundant sidewalk cafes. Stilettos may be a step too far at this point but, if sheltering at home has taught us anything, it is that we can really appreciate style with comfort and a number of decorators and fashion collaborations are bringing us luxurious interiors fabrics and trimmings for our soles.
Today, Schumacher launches their first-ever foray into footwear, partnering with Margaux to release five classic silhouettes (The Demi, Ballet Mule, The Pointe, Mule, and Flat Sandal) covered in signature Schumacher’s prints. “We are not just in a moment where people are excited to get dressed again, but also people are shopping and looking more than ever before for really special things,” says Margaux co-founder Sarah Pierson. After Sarah and co-founder Alexa Buckley profiled Schumacher creative director Dara Caponigro for their Gaux Girl blog, Caponigro opened the archives to the duo with the idea of interpreting the fabric house’s iconic prints for their modern fit and size inclusive silhouettes.
A couple of years ago, Paloma wrote about Aquazzura’s collaboration with her favorite purveyor of fine hand-painted wallpapers, deGournay, and while not everyone can surround themselves with four walls of scenic splendor, some styles are still available for two feet at a recently more accessible price point.
Stubbs & Wootton has released two special collections with classic fabric houses. With Colefax and Fowler they designed a selection of jewel toned slippers in fine Egyptian cotton-velvet embroidered with flowers borrowed from their iconic chintz’, including the ever popular Bowood. Stubbs & Wootton also honors Scalamandre’s iconic dancing Zebra motif (originally designed in 1945 by Flora Scalamandre for the Gino of Capri restaurant on the Upper East Side) and a more recent Scalamandre favorite, Leaping Cheetah, in both linen and velvets.
Still more collaborations are in the works to keep us well shod, many with a charitable twist. Artemis produces one-of-a-kind kilim shoes, repurposing damaged rugs sourced in Turkey. Over the years they have added shapes in the unique carpet styles, as well as branching out into textiles using hand-loomed velvet and silk. Interior designer Charlotte Moss teamed up with Ibu Movement founder Susan Hull Walker bringing Artemis a beloved pair of her own vintage shoes for inspiration. The resulting “Moss Mule” makes use of one-of-a-kind textiles from Moss’ personal collection and a selection of her favorite velvets, with 10% of all sales benefiting the Ibu Foundation, which trains and supports women artisans around the world. Moss, Walker and Artemis are at work on a new design direction that will launch shortly and Artemis has another special collection with a charitable bent in the works with a beloved American fabric brand.
Renowned interior trim company Samuel & Sons partnered with luxury footwear designer Sarah Flint to produce a limited-edition footwear collection, marrying Flint’s original designs with Samuel & Sons luxury passementerie. Inspired by the rich color palettes and lush interiors found in England’s Newby Hall and Broughton Hall estates, this four-style capsule is crafted of velvets and suedes in soothing hues. The collection includes Flint’s Perfect Pump and the Natalie Flat silhouettes, as well as two new styles, the Perfect Dress Bootie and the Mackie – a feminine play on a traditional men’s blucher style Derby. Each shoe, hand-crafted in Italy, is finished with distinct Samuel & Sons trimming, such as Palais cord piping and Annecy Gimp toe caps.
Pavilion Parade, a collaboration between couture designer Joanne Fleming in the UK and South African shoe designer Caryn Wilensky, produces a custom collection of exquisite artworks for the feet. Fleming sources and curates a vast collection of antique fabrics and embellishments, often from centuries old textiles, carefully cleaning and stabilizing them in her studio before dispatching them to South Africa where Wilensky’s team works their magic to create wonderful babouche inspired shapes. Then the shoes travel back to England where the fine details are added. Each pair of Loungers (the backless mule style) and Promenaders (the high back style) is a labor of love and no two pairs are identical. The duo offers a custom made-to-order service using modern fabrics as well.
