We are currently working on a new construction house for a long-time client. We’ve hesitated to call it a “modern farmhouse” lest we evoke visions of HGTV-style shiplap and barn doors. Instead, my inspiration has been the architectural vernacular frequently found in California– clean lines and lots of texture and contrast compliments of materials like rough-hewn beams, reclaimed limestone floors, plaster, and so on. One of my favorite California architects is the great Howard Backen of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger architects whose work I came to love in Napa Valley. One of his most recent projects, a spectacular Santa Barbara house with sweeping views of the ocean is currently featured in Architectural Digest. With understated yet significant interiors by mother/son duo Kathleen and Tommy Clements, the end result is an absolute dream!
